Total Roofing Installation Services
With the cost of roofing on the rise and all of the nightmare stories about roofs failing in the first ten years, it is more important than ever to make sure it gets done right the first time. We’ve all heard the old adage: you get what you pay for, and it’s no fun to say, but it’s true, especially when it comes to roofing. You can count on the experienced crew at Wendell's Roofing & Remodeling to make sure your roof is professionally and properly installed.
Underlayment is the backbone of a good roofing system it is a key element in a roof’s ability to stand up to the test of time. The purpose of underlayment is to be a final defense against leaks, but more importantly, to act as a vapor barrier between the heat and moisture in the attic and the base of the shingle. Modern shingles are thicker and contain a rubberized material, causing them to expand and contract up to four times as much as older, asbestos composition shingles. These rubberized shingles allow for longer life. However, it creates a need for a vapor barrier beneath the shingles to keep heat and moisture in the attic from infiltrating and damaging the shingles during expansion.
Affordable Felt Paper Underlayment
Felt paper is the least expensive underlayment. It is basically paper saturated in tar and used to seal the wood around the nails. The problem is that when tar paper gets hot, it sticks to the underside of the shingles, causing it to tear when the shingles expand and contract. So while felt paper is inexpensive, it is not a long-term solution in modern roofing systems.
High-Quality Synthetic Underlayments
Synthetic underlayments are a much better option when it comes to creating a permanent vapor barrier and a complete roofing system. While these underlayments cost more up front, when installed properly by a professional, using synthetics will most definitely save you money in the long run. Synthetic underlayment is a tarp-like material, woven with thousands of strands of nylon thread, that constrict around the nail at the entry to create a water-tight seal around nails and fasteners upon entry. By creating this seal, it eliminates the need for tar or petroleum, reducing the level of flammability. These materials do not break down over time, and will not tear from the expansion and contraction of the roof, leaving the vapor barrier intact for the life of the home.
